Untitled Houston

Presenting a two person booth with Carter Flachbarth and Conner O’Leary

September 18-21, 2025

Booth A5

Martha’s is delighted to participate in Untitled Houston for the first edition of the fair! We will be presenting new paintings by Carter Flachbarth and Conner O'Leary in booth A5.

Carter Flachbarth (b. 1996) received a B.F.A. in painting from SCAD in 2020 and is based in Atlanta, GA. Flachbarth's artistic practice is centered on the idea of illusion, where he explores the relationship between space, light, and form. His work delves into the mechanics of illusions, engaging the viewer's perception to unveil the inherent deceptive nature of paintings. Often featuring sullen figures with highly expressive features, his paintings create narratives that delve into the psychology of the subjects through cinematic actions and gestures.

Conner O’Leary’s (b. 1990) paintings are clearly in a lineage of surrealism, but they are also influenced by Northern European Genre Painting, a school from the 16th and 17th centuries characterized by exquisite renderings of the everyday by such masters as Bruegel and van Eyck. At the time, genre painting was ranked below portraiture of nobles and paintings of history and mythology, deemed less important because of its subject matter. In the centuries since, we correctly no longer categorize art’s importance on its literal subject matter but instead on some amalgam of skill, imagination, intellect, and aura.
