Soft Threads

February 21-March 21, 2026
Westside Market location

Martha's is thrilled to present Soft Threads, an exhibition that brings together two textile artists using their mediums very differently. Both intricate in process and vibrant in color, Medel and Young tell familiar stories through their unconventional mediums.

Erick Medel uses his sewing machine like a drawing tool, creating threaded images of marionetas and floral arrangements. Both are indicative of his Mexican background and immediate surroundings. Medel sources his denim from the fashion district in downtown LA, which is ripe with culture and near the very busy floral district. It’s in these places where Medel finds imagery for his works.

While previous works by Jon Young explored the signage and language of the American West, this new body of work sets a more abstract tone. Iridescent upholstered fabric protrudes out of the frame, while sand that Young has collected from various national parks creates a quiet but textured background. We’re still greeted by familiar imagery like flowers and cactus, but the compositions feel more surreal in spirit.

Opening reception will be held at our Westside Market location on Saturday, February 21, from 10:30-1:00 PM, and the show will run through March 21, 2026. Please reach out to Meredith (mer@marthas.gallery) or Ricky (ricky@marthas.gallery) with any inquiries or questions.
